Under the theory that receiving any money for a seat on a flight is better than letting that seat fly empty... most major air carriers have instituted special low cost, "last minute" discounted fares available only on the Internet.

Although you can fly from almost anywhere to anywhere, here are a few examples of recently available bargains.

Round-trip Detroit-to-Seattle for $179. That's 69% off the regular 21-day advance fare of $572, and 88% off the regular full fare of $1496.00!

Here are more examples of recent round-trip bargains.
Detroit to Louisville $69
Memphis to Philadelphia $119
Minneapolis to Baltimore $119

Following are examples of recent one way bargain fares
New York to Indianapolis $69
Los Angeles to Indianapolis $89
Chicago to Sarasota FL $89

Some carriers will even throw in a bargain hotel room and/or rental car at your destination. Northwest recently offered a bargain fare of only $69 round-trip Minneapolis-to-Chicago and to top off the deal, offered a room in Chicago's Radisson hotel for only $49 per night.

OK, into every open jar of ointment, a fly must go... Here are the nitty gritty details. These bargain fares are offered only on the internet. The deals change every week, and most air carriers don't post the bargain rates until a Wednesday just prior to the weekend for which they're available.

Other caveats are that you sometimes must travel only on certain days of the week. Each carrier has slightly different rules so when you access their web page to check on this, please read their fine print carefully.

Some air carriers post their bargains directly on their web page. Others require you to get on their internet mailing list and will send you the deals each Wednesday via email.

Now, most travel agents are not going to know about these bargains at this time. You're going to have to "educate" them. Also, if you call the airlines at their regular telephone numbers, their people may not know anything about these Internet bargain fares. You usually must make your reservations on the individual air carrier's web page, or call the special Internet reservation telephone number they give you on their web page.

Below are the major carriers presently offering Internet specials. These links take you directly to their web page which tells about their bargain rates, or how to get on their mailing list to receive them. Some of these pages are "graphics heavy" and take some time to load if you have a slow Internet connection. Your savings will be worth the wait.

Happy flying!

We're often asked, "what is the very best bargain in air travel offered on the internet?"

That, of course, is a question that definitely does not have one single answer. It all depends on when and where you want to fly.

For this writer however... the best bargain as of this writing is from Cathay Pacific Airlines. Cathay offers a round trip flight Los Angeles or New York to Hong Kong for only $395!

We like the sound of that since it hasn't been very long ago that we paid almost $2000.00 for that same flight.

Another just announced Cathay Pacific deal is only $899.

You can travel round trip New York or L.A. to Hong Kong... then take 30 days to tour the Orient. Visit Bangkok, Cebu, Columbo, Denpasar (Bali), Fukuoka, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Nagouya, Osaka, Penang, Sapporo, Seoul, Singapore, Surabaya, Taipei, and Tokyo.

Extend your travel period to 45 days for an additional $100 or 60 days for $200.

Cathay's bargain offers vary from time to time... but you will do well to keep an eye on their web site if you are an avid travel bargain-hunter.

Many visitors to The Senior Center have expressed an interest in visiting our "old stomping grounds" in Nam... namely Saigon. Well it's now named Ho Chi Minh City, and the best buy we've found to date is $799 round trip. For details and reservations, contact Best Fares International Air Travel toll free at 800-576-2242.
